About Renft
Renft is a German rock band formed in Leipzig in 1958 and closely associated with East Germany’s rock scene. Also billed as the Klaus Renft Combo, the group became known for politically pointed and allegorical German-language songs including “Wer die Rose ehrt,” “Zwischen Liebe und Zorn” and “Apfeltraum,” as well as the albums Klaus Renft Combo and Renft.
East German authorities withdrew the group’s performance permit in 1962, but it returned with a new lineup in 1967 and played dance halls and youth venues around the GDR. In 1975, a state licensing committee again prohibited the band from performing, effectively ending its concert work there. Former members brought Renft back to the stage after German reunification, and founder Klaus Renft took part in the revived group.
