New York Philharmonic in New York

The New York Philharmonic is an American symphony orchestra founded in New York City in 1842. Its history includes music-director tenures by Gustav Mahler and Leonard Bernstein, and it gave the world premiere of Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” in 1893. The orchestra’s first concert took place at the Apollo Rooms in 1842 and included Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. It made Carnegie Hall its principal home in 1891, then moved to Philharmonic Hall at Lincoln Center in 1962. That auditorium was later named Avery Fisher Hall and then David Geffen Hall. Leonard Bernstein led the orchestra on a 1959 tour of the Soviet Union. Decades later, Lorin Maazel conducted its 2008 concert in Pyongyang, the first visit to North Korea by an American orchestra.
