About Sonya Yoncheva
Sonya Yoncheva is a Bulgarian-Swiss operatic soprano, born in Plovdiv in 1981. She studied piano and voice there before earning a master’s degree in classical singing from the Geneva Conservatory. After joining William Christie’s Jardin des Voix academy, she performed Baroque repertoire and won the women’s first prize at Operalia in 2010.
In 2013, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Gilda in Rigoletto. Her stage repertoire has since included Tosca, Norma, Mimì in La bohème, Violetta in La traviata, Desdemona in Otello and Lisa in The Queen of Spades, and she has also appeared at London’s Royal Opera House.
