Sophie Straat is a Dutch singer-songwriter from Amsterdam who recasts smartlap, a tradition of direct and sentimental popular song, as politically charged pop with a punk edge. Working closely with guitarist and producer Wieger Hoogendorp, she became known through the EP ’t Is Niet Mijn Schuld and the album Smartlap Is Niet Dood. “Vrijheid,” recorded with Goldband, and “Wat Is Het Kut Om Agent Te Zijn” are among her best-known songs. After the release of Smartlap Is Niet Dood, Sophie Straat played a run of Dutch club shows and appeared at Paradiso. She performs with a full band, a format she has also brought to Lowlands and Pinkpop.
