Sounds Of Blackness is an American vocal and instrumental ensemble formed at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1969. Led for decades by music director Gary Hines, the group performs gospel, soul and R&B rooted in African American musical traditions. Its best-known recordings include “Optimistic,” “The Pressure Pt. 1,” and the albums The Evolution of Gospel and Africa to America: The Journey of the Drum, created during its work with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Sounds Of Blackness has performed at the Super Bowl and the Olympic Games, bringing its large vocal ensemble and band to major international events. Alongside those appearances, its concert-hall history includes Carnegie Hall in New York and the Kennedy Center in Washington.
