Southern Culture on the Skids in Morro Bay

Southern Culture on the Skids is an American trio formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1983. Rick Miller, Mary Huff and Dave Hartman play rockabilly, surf rock and country-rock, pairing guitar-driven songs with humor drawn from Southern food and roadside culture. The album Dirt Track Date introduced many listeners to the band through songs including “Camel Walk” and “Soul City.” Southern Culture on the Skids toured American clubs throughout the 1990s, performing material that later included the album Plastic Seat Sweat. The concert release Live at El Sol documented the trio at Sala El Sol in Madrid. Their stage format centers on Miller on guitar, Huff on bass and Hartman on drums; fried chicken is traditionally passed into the room during “Eight Piece Box,” while “Banana Pudding” provides another established audience ritual.
