Sweet Honey In The Rock in Rockville

Sweet Honey in the Rock is an American a cappella vocal ensemble founded in Washington, D.C., in 1973 by Bernice Johnson Reagon. Rooted in gospel, spirituals, folk music and African diasporic traditions, the group is known for songs of civil rights, community and social justice, including Reagon’s “Ella’s Song” and Ysaye Barnwell’s “Breaths.” Sweet Honey in the Rock has presented this repertoire at the Kennedy Center during decades of touring in the United States and abroad. Its concerts center on layered unaccompanied voices, hand percussion, movement and American Sign Language interpretation. Carnegie Hall is among the major concert stages where the ensemble has performed.
