Yo La Tengo in New York

Yo La Tengo is an American indie-rock band formed in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1984 by Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley; bassist James McNew joined in 1992. Their music includes guitar-driven rock, hushed pop and extended noise pieces, and key records include Painful, I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One and And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out. “Autumn Sweater” and “Sugarcube” are among their best-known songs. In 2001, Yo La Tengo began its series of Hanukkah concerts at Maxwell’s, booking different opening acts and guest performers for each night. The Freewheeling Yo La Tengo concerts later presented Kaplan, Hubley and McNew seated for acoustic songs, requests and audience questions. After the club closed, the band revived the Hanukkah series in 2017 at New York’s Bowery Ballroom.
