About The Blackbyrds
The Blackbyrds are an American jazz-funk and soul band formed in Washington, D.C., in 1973 by students at Howard University under trumpeter Donald Byrd’s guidance. Their best-known recordings include “Walking in Rhythm,” “Rock Creek Park” and “Happy Music,” while albums such as Flying Start and City Life established their horn-led, rhythm-focused sound.
In 2012, original drummer and vocalist Keith Killgo helped reactivate The Blackbyrds for a new period of performances. They subsequently brought their 1970s repertoire back to jazz clubs and festivals, including engagements at Ronnie Scott’s in London.
