About The Chieftains
The Chieftains are an Irish traditional folk group formed in Dublin in 1962 by uilleann piper Paddy Moloney. Their repertoire brought instruments such as uilleann pipes, fiddle, flute, tin whistle and bodhrán to a broad international audience. Key recordings include the debut album The Chieftains, Irish Heartbeat with Van Morrison and the guest-filled The Long Black Veil.
The Chieftains toured China in 1983 and performed at the Great Wall, a visit documented on The Chieftains in China. In 1990 they took part in Roger Waters’ production of The Wall at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. The group marked its 50th anniversary in 2012 with a St. Patrick’s Day concert at Carnegie Hall.
