The Chuck Wagon Gang in Shipshewana

The Chuck Wagon Gang is an American Southern gospel group formed in Lubbock, Texas, in 1935 by D.P. Carter and his children. Its close family harmony and spare acoustic backing became familiar through recordings of hymns and gospel standards including “I’ll Fly Away,” “A Beautiful Life” and “The Church in the Wildwood.” Their first performances were daily broadcasts on KFYO in Lubbock, where the family sang four-part harmony accompanied by guitar. The group took that format to churches, auditoriums and gospel singings, and later performed at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl and the Grand Ole Opry.
