The Greyboy Allstars are an American funk-jazz band formed in San Diego in 1993. Their music draws on soul jazz, acid jazz and deep funk, and their catalog includes West Coast Boogaloo, recorded with trombonist Fred Wesley, A Town Called Earth and What Happened to Television?. The 1999 album Live documented the improvisational performances that established the group as a touring act. After periods devoted to other projects, the musicians reunited for further runs and anniversary engagements, returning to the Belly Up in Solana Beach and performing during New Orleans Jazz Fest season at Tipitina’s. A Greyboy Allstars concert uses a five-piece setup of saxophone and flute, organ and keyboards, guitar, bass and drums. The arrangements leave space for extended solos and ensemble improvisation, led in large part by Karl Denson and Robert Walter.
