The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble is a Dutch experimental group formed in Utrecht in 2000 by musician Jason Köhnen and filmmaker Gideon Kiers. The project began by composing new scores for silent films, including Nosferatu and Metropolis, and developed a dark, atmospheric sound built from jazz instrumentation, electronics and ambient textures. Its principal albums include The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, Here Be Dragons and From the Stairwell. The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble developed from a two-person audiovisual project into a touring ensemble. Its concert lineup included cellist Nina Hitz, trombonist Hilary Jeffery and vocalist Charlotte Cegarra, allowing the group to perform the layered arrangements as a full band. Recordings of this live incarnation were collected on I Forsee the Dark Ahead, If I Stay.
