The Originals in Los Angeles

The Originals were an American soul vocal group formed in Detroit in 1966 and signed to Motown. They are best known for the ballads “Baby, I’m for Real” and “The Bells,” both associated with Marvin Gaye’s writing and production, as well as the later disco track “Down to Love Town.” The Originals appeared on Soul Train during the 1970s, performing the close-harmony material that defined their records. Later lineups carried those songs into oldies concerts and soul revues, keeping the group’s stage repertoire rooted in its Motown catalogue.
