Tommy Dorsey Orchestra is an American jazz and swing big band formed by trombonist Tommy Dorsey in 1935 after he left the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra. The band became known for ballads arranged at dance tempos, vocal pop numbers and Dixieland features by the Clambake Seven. Its signature recordings include “I’m Getting Sentimental over You,” “Marie,” “Song of India,” “I’ll Never Smile Again,” “Well, Git It” and “Opus One.” Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, Buddy Rich and Bunny Berigan all performed in the orchestra, while Sy Oliver contributed arrangements and compositions. The orchestra opened the Hollywood Palladium on the venue’s first night. It carried on after its founder’s death under leaders including Sam Donahue and Buddy Morrow, who directed the ensemble from 1977 to 2010.
