War is an American band formed in Long Beach, California, in 1969, playing funk, soul, rock, Latin music and jazz. The group first recorded with Eric Burdon, producing “Spill the Wine,” and later became known for songs including “Low Rider,” “The Cisco Kid” and “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” Its major albums include The World Is a Ghetto and Why Can’t We Be Friends?. Eric Burdon and War played Ronnie Scott’s in London in September 1970, when Jimi Hendrix joined the group for a late-night jam that became his final public performance. After Burdon’s departure, the band toured under the War name and documented its concert repertoire on War Live, recorded during a 1972 engagement at the High Chaparral in Chicago.
Tower of Power is an American funk and soul band formed in Oakland in 1968. Its sound is built around tightly arranged horns and a deep rhythm section, heard on albums including Bump City and Tower of Power. “You’re Still a Young Man,” “So Very Hard to Go” and “What Is Hip?” are among the band’s best-known songs. In 2018, Tower of Power marked its 50th anniversary with two concerts at the Fox Theater, bringing former and serving members together for the occasion. Recordings from those shows were later released as 50 Years of Funk & Soul: Live at the Fox Theater, documenting the band’s long-running concert repertoire. Tower of Power performs as a full band centered on its five-piece horn section, lead vocals, keyboards, guitar, bass and drums. The arrangements leave room for instrumental features while retaining the ensemble parts associated with saxophonists Emilio Castillo and Stephen “Doc” Kupka. Its festival appearances have included Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam.
