Werner Schmidbauer is a German singer-songwriter, guitarist and television presenter, born in Munich in 1961. He writes mainly in Bavarian dialect, and his catalogue includes the albums Momentnsammler and Wo bleibt die Musik?. He is also known for presenting the Bayerischer Rundfunk programmes Aufgspuit! and Gipfeltreffen. The Süden concert project took him on tour with multi-instrumentalist Martin Kälberer and Sicilian singer-songwriter Pippo Pollina. The trio later returned with Süden II, extending a stage collaboration centred on songs by Schmidbauer, Kälberer and Pollina.
Martin Kälberer is a German multi-instrumentalist, composer and singer-songwriter, born in Ulm in 1967. His music draws on jazz, folk and ambient sound, and he is known for his long partnership with Bavarian songwriter Werner Schmidbauer, solo recordings including Baltasound, and the trio project Süden with Sicilian singer-songwriter Pippo Pollina. Martin Kälberer toured for many years as Werner Schmidbauer’s musical partner, accompanying the songs on piano, keyboards and percussion. That collaboration later expanded into Süden with Pippo Pollina, leading to concert tours and recordings under the trio’s name. His solo concerts use piano, keyboards, percussion and live looping, allowing him to construct layered arrangements alone onstage. He has presented this format as One Man Orchestra.
