Wiener Philharmoniker in Vienna

Wiener Philharmoniker is an Austrian symphony orchestra founded in 1842 by conductor Otto Nicolai. Its concert and recorded repertoire is closely associated with Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner and the Strauss family, as well as a distinctive orchestral sound maintained through its self-governing traditions. In 1870, the orchestra made the Golden Hall of the Musikverein its principal concert home. It has performed at the Salzburg Festival since 1920, appearing in both opera productions and orchestral concerts, while the New Year’s Concert has been an annual event since 1941. Invited conductors lead its symphonic programs, and its players are selected from the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera.
