Wynton Marsalis in New York

Wynton Marsalis is an American trumpeter and composer, born in New Orleans in 1961, whose work spans jazz rooted in swing and blues as well as the classical trumpet repertoire. His best-known recordings include Black Codes (From the Underground) and the Marsalis Standard Time series; his oratorio Blood on the Fields became the first jazz composition to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Music. In 1980, Wynton Marsalis joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, beginning a period that also included touring with Herbie Hancock before he formed his own group. He later became artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and took leadership of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, which performs its New York seasons at Frederick P. Rose Hall.
