Alejandro Escovedo is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, born in San Antonio in 1951 and long associated with Austin’s roots-rock scene. His career has included punk with The Nuns, country-rock with Rank and File, and the harder rock of True Believers, followed by solo albums such as Gravity, Thirteen Years, A Man Under the Influence and Real Animal. “Castanets” and “Always a Friend” are among his best-known solo songs.

In 1978, he played guitar with The Nuns when the group opened the Sex Pistols’ final concert at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. He later toured with Rank and File and fronted True Believers before documenting his mid-1990s solo performances on More Miles Than Money: Live 1994-96. In 2008, Bruce Springsteen joined him during a concert at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park.
