Artist
Amadou & Mariam are a Malian husband-and-wife duo who play guitar-led African pop and blues. Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia met at Mali’s Institute for the Young Blind and began performing together in the 1980s. The Manu Chao-produced album Dimanche à Bamako brought songs including “Senegal Fast Food,” while Welcome to Mali featured “Sabali.” Their 2009 live schedule included support dates on Coldplay’s Viva la Vida Tour and the premiere of Eclipse at Manchester International Festival. Created as a concert performed in complete darkness, Eclipse placed the duo and their band out of sight as the music unfolded around the audience. They also performed at Glastonbury Festival in England and Coachella in California, taking their live work far beyond their home city.
