Artist
Amaro Freitas is a Brazilian pianist and composer, born in Recife in 1991, whose instrumental jazz draws on frevo, maracatu and other musical traditions of Pernambuco. His albums include Sangue Negro, Rasif, Sankofa and Y’Y, records marked by percussive piano playing and exploratory composition. At the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, Amaro Freitas performed in the piano-trio format central to his early records. He later brought music from Y’Y to NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert.
