Beats Antique is an American electronic music trio formed in Oakland in 2007 by Zoe Jakes, David Satori and Tommy Cappel. The group combines electronic production with percussion, strings and music drawn from Middle Eastern and Balkan traditions; its catalog includes “Beauty Beats” and the albums Collide, Blind Threshold and A Thousand Faces. The Creature Carnival tour took Beats Antique across North America in 2014 with a theatrical concert built around the album of the same name. The trio followed it with the Shadowbox tour in 2016 and later took Grand Bizarre on the road, extending a live history centered on theatres, clubs and festival stages. Beats Antique performs as an electronic trio: Satori plays instruments including violin and banjo, Cappel handles drums and percussion, and Jakes combines dance with percussion. Choreographed movement, masks, costumes and large-scale puppetry have become recurring parts of the group’s stage productions. Festival appearances have included Burning Man in Nevada and Lightning in a Bottle in California. Both events place Beats Antique in settings closely associated with the group’s mix of electronic music, dance and performance art, particularly Lightning in a Bottle.
Roni Kaspi is an Israeli jazz drummer, songwriter, producer and singer born in Tel Aviv in 2000. She began playing drums at seven, studied at the Thelma Yellin High School for the Arts and attended Berklee College of Music on a scholarship. She is known for her work in bassist Avishai Cohen’s trio and for Roniponi, her own project drawing on jazz, pop and electronica. In 2020, Kaspi joined Avishai Cohen’s trio and later toured Europe with the group, as well as playing on the 2022 album Shifting Sands. A 2023 performance at Gretchen in Berlin presented her own live project under a jazz and electronica billing.
