David Murray is an American jazz musician, composer and bandleader known for his tenor saxophone and bass clarinet work. Born in Oakland in 1955, he has worked across free jazz and post-bop, co-founded the World Saxophone Quartet and recorded albums including Flowers for Albert, Ming and Home. After moving to New York in 1975, he performed in the city’s loft-jazz scene and began touring with the World Saxophone Quartet. He also led quartets, octets and big bands: Live at the Lower Manhattan Ocean Club documents an early New York ensemble, and the David Murray Big Band was recorded at Sweet Basil.
