Edson Gomes is a Brazilian roots-reggae singer and songwriter, born in Cachoeira, Bahia, in 1955. His songs address inequality, racism and everyday life, and his best-known recordings include “Malandrinha,” “Samarina,” “Árvore” and “Criminalidade,” alongside albums such as Reggae Resistência and Campo de Batalha. Ao Vivo em Salvador documented his concert repertoire with Banda Cão de Raça, the group closely associated with his performances. He has also brought that catalogue to República do Reggae, a major gathering for Brazilian reggae in Bahia.
Groundation is an American roots-reggae band formed in Sonoma County, California, in 1998 by Harrison Stafford, Marcus Urani and Ryan Newman. Its music draws on dub and jazz improvisation, and albums including Each One Teach One, Hebron Gate and We Free Again established the group’s sound. The concert release Live It Up documented Groundation’s early stage repertoire and the extended arrangements used by its full band. The group has returned repeatedly to European reggae festivals, performing at Rototom Sunsplash in Spain and Summerjam in Germany.
