Fred Penner is a Canadian children’s singer-songwriter and television host, born in 1946. His folk-based songs are known to generations of families through his recording of “The Cat Came Back,” the song “Sandwiches” and the CBC series Fred Penner’s Place; his debut album was also titled The Cat Came Back.

Fred Penner began performing for children in the 1970s and carried that repertoire into family concerts across Canada. His shows center on vocals, acoustic guitar, storytelling and audience participation, and his festival appearances have included the Winnipeg Folk Festival.
