About Freda Payne
Freda Payne is an American singer and actor born in Detroit in 1942. She began as a jazz vocalist and became best known for the 1970 soul single “Band of Gold,” released by Invictus Records. “Deeper and Deeper” and the anti-war song “Bring the Boys Home” are other key recordings from that period.
Early in her career, Payne toured with Pearl Bailey, then understudied Leslie Uggams in the 1967 Broadway musical Hallelujah, Baby! and appeared in an Equity Library Theatre production of Lost in the Stars. She later performed in stage productions of Ain’t Misbehavin’ and the revue Sophisticated Ladies, built around the music of Duke Ellington.
