About Future Islands
Future Islands are an American synth-pop band formed in 2006 in Greenville, North Carolina, and later based in Baltimore. Their music is built around synthesizers, bass-led post-punk rhythms and Samuel T. Herring’s baritone. They are best known for “Seasons (Waiting on You)” from the album Singles; their catalogue also includes In Evening Air, On the Water and The Far Field.
Their March 2014 performance of “Seasons (Waiting on You)” on Late Show with David Letterman drew attention to Herring’s physical stage presence. Future Islands spent the following years touring behind Singles and The Far Field in clubs, theatres and at festivals, then returned to the road for the Calling Out in Space Tour after As Long As You Are.
Future Islands perform as a full band: Herring sings, William Cashion plays bass and guitar, Gerrit Welmers handles keyboards, and Michael Lowry plays drums. Herring’s dancing and sudden shifts between crooning and growls are recurring features of the group’s concerts.
Their festival appearances have included Coachella in Indio and Primavera Sound in Barcelona.
