Illapu is a Chilean folk group formed in Antofagasta in 1971 by members of the Márquez family. Its music draws on Andean traditions and the nueva canción movement, using instruments including quena, panpipes and charango. The group is known for songs such as “Vuelvo para vivir” and “Lejos del amor,” as well as the album Chungará. After a European tour in 1981, the musicians were denied re-entry to Chile and continued performing in exile, first in France and later in Mexico. Their 1988 homecoming included a major concert at Parque La Bandera in Santiago. Illapu later performed at the Festival Internacional de la Canción de Viña del Mar.
