Jon Faddis is an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader and composer, born in Oakland in 1953. A protégé of Dizzy Gillespie, he is known for bebop phrasing, upper-register trumpet playing and big-band work. His recordings include Into the Faddisphere and Hornucopia. At 18, Jon Faddis joined Lionel Hampton’s orchestra, and he later performed in the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. That experience fed into his own work as a bandleader: as founding music director, he led the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band from 1992 to 2002.
