Matt Johnson in North Vancouver

Matt Johnson is an English singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who formed The The in London in 1979 and has remained its central figure. His work encompasses post-punk, alternative rock, soul and electronic pop. He is known for albums including Soul Mining, Infected, Mind Bomb and Dusk, and for songs such as “This Is the Day,” “Uncertain Smile” and “Heartland.” The The toured Mind Bomb in 1989 with Johnny Marr in the concert lineup and later took NakedSelf on the road. Johnson then stepped away from touring for many years before reviving the live band in 2018; a London concert from that return was documented as The Comeback Special: Live at the Royal Albert Hall.
