Monobloco in São Paulo

Monobloco is a Brazilian percussion group and Carnival bloco created in Rio de Janeiro in 2000 by musicians from Pedro Luís e a Parede. Its repertoire covers samba, funk carioca, maracatu, coco and other Brazilian rhythms. The group became known through its annual Carnival parade, percussion workshops and recordings including Monobloco and Arrastão da Alegria. The first Monobloco parade took place in Leblon in 2001, and later editions followed routes through Copacabana and Avenida Rio Branco. The group also developed a smaller stage ensemble for theatres, festivals and international touring, while the full bloco’s post-Carnival parade was later staged at Aterro do Flamengo.
