About Morphine

Morphine was an American alternative-rock trio formed in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1989 by singer and two-string slide bassist Mark Sandman and saxophonist Dana Colley, joined by drummer Jerome Deupree. Baritone saxophone, sparse percussion and Sandman’s bass gave the group its low-register sound, heard on albums including Good, Cure for Pain and Yes, and songs such as “Buena,” “Cure for Pain” and “Honey White.”

In 1994, Morphine recorded a concert at St. Andrew’s Hall in Detroit that was later released as Bootleg Detroit. The band toured clubs and festivals across the United States and Europe during the 1990s. During a 1999 performance at Nel Nome del Rock in Palestrina, Sandman collapsed onstage and died; Morphine disbanded after his death.
