Ottmar Liebert is a German guitarist, born in Cologne in 1959, whose instrumental music draws on flamenco rhythms, jazz and pop. He records and performs with Luna Negra, and is best known for the album Nouveau Flamenco and pieces including “Barcelona Nights.” Viva!, released in 1995, documented Ottmar Liebert and Luna Negra in concert and established a live counterpart to his studio catalogue. The concert film Live in Santa Fe later captured the ensemble’s guitar-led format at the Lensic Performing Arts Center.
Ottmar Liebert & Luna Negra is an instrumental nouveau-flamenco group founded in Santa Fe in 1989 by German guitarist and composer Ottmar Liebert. The project is known for the album Nouveau Flamenco and its signature piece “Barcelona Nights”; other early records include Borrasca and Solo Para Ti. The 1995 concert album ¡Viva! documented the ensemble onstage after its first run of studio records. Ottmar Liebert & Luna Negra have since toured internationally, presenting this repertoire in theatres, performing-arts centers and festivals. The shows center on Ottmar Liebert’s nylon-string guitar, supported by percussion, bass and rhythm guitar.
