About The Cult
The Cult are a British rock band formed in Bradford in 1983 by singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy. Their music moved from post-punk and gothic rock toward hard rock on albums including Love, Electric and Sonic Temple. Their best-known songs include “She Sells Sanctuary,” “Rain,” “Love Removal Machine” and “Fire Woman.”
During the 1987 tour behind Electric, Guns N’ Roses opened for The Cult on North American dates. The band joined Metallica’s Damaged Justice tour for arena shows in 1989, then revisited its own catalogue on the Electric 13 tour in 2013, performing Electric in full. The 2019 A Sonic Temple tour marked the album’s 30th anniversary.
They performed at Rock in Rio at the Maracanã in 1991 and at Download Festival in Donington Park in 2006.
