About The John Butler Trio
The John Butler Trio is an Australian roots-rock band formed in Fremantle in 1998 by singer, guitarist and songwriter John Butler. Its acoustic-led music draws on blues, folk and extended improvisation, and the group is known for songs including “Zebra” and “Better Than” and albums such as Sunrise Over Sea, Grand National and April Uprising.
The trio’s 2004 performance at OpenAir St. Gallen was released as Live at St. Gallen the following year. A 2010 concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre was later documented on Live at Red Rocks, reflecting the band’s move between festival stages and major outdoor venues.
The concert format places John Butler on vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, backed by bass and drums. Solo performances of his long-form instrumental “Ocean” have also been a recurring part of the set.
The band returned repeatedly to Bluesfest in Byron Bay and also performed at Glastonbury Festival.
