The Manhattans are an American R&B and soul vocal group formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1962. Their close harmonies and romantic ballads became widely known through “Kiss and Say Goodbye,” “Shining Star,” “There’s No Me Without You” and “Hurt.” The Manhattans performed “Kiss and Say Goodbye” on Soul Train during the 1970s. Decades later, Gerald Alston fronted the group for the PBS concert Rhythm, Love & Soul, recorded at the Benedum Center in Pittsburgh.
Deniece Williams is an American soul, R&B and pop singer-songwriter, born in Gary, Indiana, in 1950. She is known for “Free,” “Silly” and “Let’s Hear It for the Boy,” as well as “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late,” her duet with Johnny Mathis. Her solo catalogue began with the album This Is Niecy and later extended into gospel music. In the early 1970s, Williams toured as a member of Wonderlove, the backing-vocal group in Stevie Wonder’s band. That engagement preceded her solo debut and placed her on concert stages as part of Stevie Wonder’s touring ensemble.
