toe in Ōta

toe is a Japanese rock band formed in 2000, known for mostly instrumental math rock and post-rock built around interlocking guitars and sharply articulated rhythms. The albums The Book About My Idle Plot on a Vague Anxiety and For Long Tomorrow established the group’s core sound; later releases include Hear You and the EP Our Latest Number. “Goodbye,” “Two Moons” and “The Latest Number” are among its best-known pieces. The 2015 tour behind Hear You included North American dates, extending the band’s concert history beyond Japan. In 2018, toe recorded a Tiny Desk Concert featuring “Two Moons,” “The Latest Number” and “Goodbye.” The filmed set documents the quartet’s two-guitar, bass-and-drums format inside NPR Music’s Washington, D.C., office.
