Yuja Wang is a Chinese classical pianist born in Beijing in 1987. Her repertoire includes music by Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev and Liszt, and her recordings include Sonatas & Etudes, Fantasia and The Berlin Recital. In 2007, she substituted for Martha Argerich in concerts with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Charles Dutoit. She made her Carnegie Hall recital debut in 2011; in 2023, she returned for a Rachmaninoff marathon featuring all four piano concertos and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Beyond her native city, she has appeared at Vienna’s Musikverein and given concerts at the Philharmonie in Berlin.
Wiener Philharmoniker is an Austrian symphony orchestra founded in 1842 by conductor Otto Nicolai. Its concert and recorded repertoire is closely associated with Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner and the Strauss family, as well as a distinctive orchestral sound maintained through its self-governing traditions. In 1870, the orchestra made the Golden Hall of the Musikverein its principal concert home. It has performed at the Salzburg Festival since 1920, appearing in both opera productions and orchestral concerts, while the New Year’s Concert has been an annual event since 1941. Invited conductors lead its symphonic programs, and its players are selected from the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera.
