Yngwie Malmsteen is a Swedish guitarist and songwriter, born in Stockholm in 1963, whose neoclassical heavy metal places rapid electric-guitar runs and classically shaped melodies at the center of the music. After playing with Steeler and Alcatrazz, he began his solo career with the 1984 album Rising Force. Its instrumentals “Black Star” and “Far Beyond the Sun” became signature works, followed by albums including Trilogy and Odyssey. His 1989 concerts in Leningrad were documented on Trial by Fire: Live in Leningrad. In 2003, he toured North America as part of G3 with Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. The Generation Axe tour followed in 2016, pairing him with Vai, Zakk Wylde, Nuno Bettencourt and Tosin Abasi.
