Chubby Checker is an American singer and dancer, born Ernest Evans in South Carolina in 1941 and raised in Philadelphia. His rock-and-roll recording of Hank Ballard’s “The Twist” helped turn the twist into a national dance craze; “Let’s Twist Again,” “Pony Time” and “Limbo Rock” became further signature songs.

American Bandstand presented him performing “The Twist” in 1960, putting both the record and its dance before a national television audience. In 1988 he returned to a nationwide broadcast for the Super Bowl XXII halftime show in San Diego, performing alongside the Rockettes.
