Daniel Barenboim is an Argentine-born Israeli pianist and conductor who was born in Buenos Aires in 1942 and grew up in Israel. He is known for his interpretations and recordings of Beethoven’s piano sonatas and concertos, Mozart’s concertos and Wagner’s operas.

Barenboim made his conducting debut with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London in 1967. He debuted at the Bayreuth Festival in 1981 conducting Tristan und Isolde, then served as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and general music director of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. In 1999 he and Edward Said founded the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, which he conducted in a widely documented concert in Ramallah in 2005.
