About ESG
ESG is an American group formed by the Scroggins sisters in the South Bronx in 1978. Their sparse, rhythm-led music draws on post-punk, funk and dance music. The self-titled 1981 EP, produced by Martin Hannett, included “Moody,” “You’re No Good” and “UFO,” a track later sampled extensively in hip-hop.
An early Bronx talent-show appearance led Ed Bahlman of 99 Records to book ESG at New York club Hurrah, where they opened for A Certain Ratio. In 1982, they performed at the opening night of the Haçienda in Manchester on a program that also included Section 25.
