About The Raincoats
The Raincoats are an English post-punk band formed in London in 1977 by Ana da Silva and Gina Birch. They are known for the single “Fairytale in the Supermarket,” their self-titled 1979 debut album and 1981’s Odyshape, records built around intersecting vocals, violin, guitar and loose rhythms. Kurt Cobain later championed the debut album and introduced the group to another generation of listeners.
The band played its first concert at the Tabernacle in Notting Hill in 1977. After its initial run ended in the 1980s, The Raincoats reunited for a 1994 show at The Garage and returned to recording with Looking in the Shadows. Further reunions included Ladyfest in Leeds in 2007 and a 40th-anniversary performance of the debut album at EartH in Hackney in 2019.
