About Islands
Islands are a Canadian indie-rock band formed in Montreal in 2005 by singer and guitarist Nick Thorburn and drummer Jamie Thompson after the breakup of The Unicorns. The group became known through its debut album, Return to the Sea, and the song “Rough Gem,” followed by records including Arm’s Way, Vapours and Ski Mask.
In 2006, Islands took Return to the Sea through North America and Europe, including dates with Why? and Cadence Weapon. The band later toured behind Ski Mask and returned to North American venues around And That’s Why Dolphins Lost Their Legs in 2023. The personnel changed across those runs, while the live group remained centered on Nick Thorburn.
