About Israel Philharmonic Orchestra

The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra is an Israeli symphony orchestra founded in 1936 by Polish violinist Bronisław Huberman as the Palestine Orchestra. It was created in part to provide work and refuge for Jewish musicians fleeing persecution in Europe, and became the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra after the establishment of Israel. It is known for its decades-long partnership with Zubin Mehta and for recordings conducted by Mehta and Leonard Bernstein.

Arturo Toscanini conducted its inaugural concert in Mandatory Palestine in 1936. Bernstein later led the 1967 concert on Mount Scopus after the Six-Day War, and in 1990 Mehta conducted its first performances in Germany, including a concert in Berlin.

Its home is Charles Bronfman Auditorium in Tel Aviv. Far beyond Israel, it has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York; appearances at the BBC Proms have also brought it to London’s Royal Albert Hall.
