Renaud Garcia-Fons is a French double bassist and composer, born in Paris in 1962. Known for extending the double bass with a fifth string and a wide melodic range, he plays instrumental jazz shaped by Mediterranean, flamenco and Middle Eastern traditions. His key recordings include Oriental Bass, Navigatore and La Línea del Sur. Renaud Garcia-Fons documented his solo concert format in Solo: The Marcevol Concert, recorded at the Priory of Marcevol in the French Pyrenees. The performance uses bowed and plucked bass, harmonics and live looping to build complete arrangements around one instrument, a format he has also taken to theatres and jazz festivals including Jazz in Marciac.
