Nino Rota was an Italian composer born in Milan in 1911, known especially for his film scores. His long collaboration with Federico Fellini produced the music for La Strada, La Dolce Vita and 8½, while his other major screen works include Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet and the first two Godfather films. The Godfather Part II earned him the Academy Award for Best Original Score.

In 1955, Teatro Massimo in Palermo gave the premiere of his opera Il cappello di paglia di Firenze. Rota later adapted music from Fellini’s La Strada into a ballet, first presented at La Scala in Milan in 1966.
