About The Bar-Kays
The Bar-Kays are an American funk and soul band formed in Memphis in 1966. They began on the Stax label as an instrumental group and session band, scoring an early hit with “Soul Finger” before developing a vocal-led funk sound heard on “Shake Your Rump to the Funk,” “Too Hot to Stop” and “Freakshow on the Dance Floor.”
Otis Redding hired The Bar-Kays as his touring band in 1967. Four members died alongside Redding in the plane crash that ended that tour, while bassist James Alexander and trumpeter Ben Cauley subsequently rebuilt the group. The new lineup later performed at the 1972 Wattstax concert at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
