About The Smothers Brothers
The Smothers Brothers were an American comedy-and-folk duo formed in 1959 by brothers Tom and Dick Smothers. Their act combined folk songs with deadpan sibling arguments, while the television series The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour became known for political satire and its conflicts with CBS before its cancellation in 1969.
A 1959 engagement at The Purple Onion in San Francisco established the format heard on their debut album, The Smothers Brothers at the Purple Onion. They spent the following decades performing in clubs, theatres and casino showrooms before retiring from regular touring in 2010. In 2019, they reunited for a performance at the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, New York.
Their stage act paired comic songs and deliberately interrupted musical numbers with recurring arguments between the brothers. The musical setup centered on acoustic guitar from Tom Smothers and double bass from Dick Smothers.
